Splash Day

Saturday was such a fun filled, busy day: Laren & Jack are here so were packing it in. We kicked it off frugalista style (yes, that’s a ridiculous word I just made up) by hitting the Hillside Church of Golden’s kids clothing swap-brilliant! I could only handle parting with one tub (out of 7!) of my precious babies’ clothes and it was a teary parting at that. But I was brave & reasonable in realizing the opportunity to trade out the dusty tub of Trip’s 18mo duds for clothes needed for the here & now was a worthy one. We walked out of there with a fresh tub of clothes for Jack, Jossi & Trip-everyone benefited! We even made a new friend & got some great insight into life in this area. Moving right along we stopped by the Golden Farmer’s Market to grab some dried apples, dried mangos & a canning book I won from the Ball booth-my lucky day! While at the Ball booth some one tapped me on the shoulder & told us they’d seen us at the clothing swap & wanted to know if we would like to do a canning swap with them. I was beside myself with domestic joy! They had just finished a batch of tomatoes & salsa verde, neither of which have I attempted, so this will be great! Once the swap occurs I will post here for those of you interested in hosting one yourselves. So Lauren & I are gearing up for a hot day in the tree house kitchen to turn boxes of Paonia peaches into luscious & sweet peach jam. (Yes, I said Paonia, not Palisade.  I am a peach snob & do declare Paonia’s peaches an arm & a leg better, sweeter & juicier than Palisade’s!) So, note here, it’s only about 11 am and we are on cloud 9 already…now for the poor, starving, patient chitlins…to the water park! A friend from church is a real estate agent & hosts a Splash Day every year, renting out the park, providing free entry, sub sandwhiches for lunch & pizza for dinner. What a fantastically free & fun summer day for the kids. After that the kids caught quick naps, I popped a gluten free, high altitude cake in the oven & we were off again, like a heard of turtles with our sunburned little ones. A new friend had invited us to a dinner party on her deck. She is a Texas that moved here the same weekend that we did! Crazy! We hit it off instantly like we had known each other all along.  So, even though the kids were dragging a bit, we couldn’t miss out on an invite like this. What a great night it was: great food, good conversation, the kids got along fantastically & my cake was a hit. You can catch a glimpse of it here on Ms. Claudine’s very own blog.

I made it in a pic-thanks Lo!

Shooting doves

Our latest family past time is sitting in the yard shooting doves. There have been so many flying in the evenings lately. We’ve even grilled them up for dinner with hot hush puppies, corn on the cob & mashed potatoes. I was unsure at first but once I tried it, I was a believer. It tasted better than a good steak! Luke was pretty pumped. “It doesn’t get any fresher than that!” He beamed in hunterly pride. He’s right.

Jack-a-bee turns 5

Jack is our friend who Jossi stayed with when I was working full time & she was only a few months old. Lauren took care of Joss for us 3 days a week & we are long-ago childhood friends who were desperately in crush with the same youth group guy. Which in some strange high school way brought us together! Well, Jack has turned 5. It’s official, he’s a kid. We love him so much & were so thrilled to get to be a part of his big day. the fishing outing was a brilliant idea on his part. The kids loved it, the weather was perfect, the food on the fire was great & the fellowship left nothing wanting. Happy birthday Jack-a-bee! We sure do love you!

Friends...

somehow I didn't get a pic of the 3 of us! I'll get Luke to work his photoshop magic.

A great day off & a fantastic break from the heat

Yay! It was so gorgeous & cool today we had to do something outdoors. We headed to Lake Grapevine to take a hike & ended up swimming despite the cool breeze. The kids had a hayday trying to dunk Luke. And yes they swam in undies because we didn’t plan on swimming! We fit right in.

Bubble Pool Fun

Today the heat wa such a beat down the kids didn’t want to be outside at all. So I tried to get them excited about the little pool & how good it would feel to splash around. I knew it wouldn’t last long, but then a great idea hit me. Bubble bath! And 2 scrub brushes-those kids were happy for 2 hours. It was so exciting for them, watching the bubbles grow & then cleaning everything they could get in or near the pool. So I set up the picnic table & some little chairs for popcicle time. It was a great way to spend the morning.  Then once the kids were down I rinsed that little slice of cool water heaven out & jumped in myself for some late afternoon sun & downtime. I was desperate. Can you blame me?

This morning we went to play with some friends who live on & work their family’s sod farm. They took the end sprinkler off and had quite the set up for the kids. It gushed water out into this huge puddle in the super soft green grass. They all loved it even with a chilly water temp. It was so fun & we moms were able to just sit in the shade & visit. Brayden (red t shirt) is the sweetest little guy & was so great to share his toys & home with us. And baby Barrett was an angel and slept the whole 3 hours we were there.

Going for a dip

Jessie & I took the kids over to Baldridge Park to check out the creek running through. They dipped their feet in & declared it cold so we all just stood around watching the water rush by. Suddenly we hear a huge splash & Trip is up to his chin in chilly river water! I lunge over to help him, he’s scrambling up on his own already, totally dazed & a surprised looking as we were. The water was only about a foot deep and maybe 2 feet across-so I don’t know how he git in so fast. He fell in again on his way out & was pretty worked up about that cold water. Luckily I had back up shorts & undies. So we changed him & kept on playing with him jabbering on about going swimming in the cold water. I don’t know if he was chasing a butterfly or if he got brave for a moment or what. But either way we got quite a laugh out of it!

Ps.
Luke says I should put up a disclaimer about why Trip is wearing my head band. Yesterday in Ouray he got so burned so today when I forgot his bandana I made him wear my headband so his ears & forhead wouldn’t get burned! Sorry he looks a little goofy-I think it’s cute!
